“I dragged my shovel up Mrs.Dupuis’s driveway to her stairs. She came to the door with a sweet smile on her aged face and insisted on paying me; I refused” said a high school student from Ludlow, Massachusetts. One student came up with a program called SASP (Sophomores Assist Seniors Program).
These students provided free yard work and clean up as well as other services for seniors over the age of 65. To advertise the SASP students would pass out fliers and post ads in bulletins. Through the SASP students feel good about what they are contributing to the community, they become inspired to start community involvement within their own communities, and they also realize that a younger person having a friendship with an older person can be a benefit to both people.
